Two Tigers In Top 10 Bowlers’ ODI List

Bangladesh cricket is going through a fun time now. After the announcement of Shakib’s being number one All Rounder in both ODI and Test cricket today we have one more great news. Both Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza are now in the list of ICC’s Top 10 Bowlers. Shakib is at number 6 position with 687 points and Mashrafe is at number 9 position with 671 points. Flintoff is at number 10 position with 662 points. They both have bowled really great in the last Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009 series.

Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009: Series Analysis

Though the tigers started this 3 ODI series with a defeat, they came back well to win the series. This is Bangladesh’s 2nd series win against Zimbabwe (2005 and 2009). Meanwhile Bangladesh had lost a series against Zimbabwe. So, we have to say that this Zimbabwe’s Tour of Bangladesh 2009 was good for the Tigers and their fans.

Most runs:
#SC Williams 105 in 153 balls
#Raqibul Hasan 94 in 156 balls
#Shakib Al Hasan 70 in 84 balls
#Tamim Iqbal 68 in 130 balls
#Prosper Utseya 65 in 199 balls

Most wickets:
#Mashrafe Mortaza: 8/69
#RW Prince: 7/51
#Shakib Al Hasan: 6/50
#Rubel Hossain: 4/66
#KM Dabengwa: 3/23

Highest partnerships according to wicket:
#1st wicket partnership: 38 runs - Tamim Iqbal, Mehrab Hossain Jr
#2nd wicket partnership: 21 runs - T Taibu, S Matsikenyeri
#3rd wicket partnership: 52 runs - Mehrab Hossain Jr, Raqibul Hasan
#4th wicket partnership: 41 runs - Raqibul Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan
#5th wicket partnership: 32 runs - Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim
#6th wicket partnership: 34 runs - Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad
#7th wicket partnership: 96 runs - SC Williams, P Utseya
#8th wicket partnership: 20 runs - P Utseya, RW Price
#9th wicket partnership: 35 runs - RW Price, Mupariwa
#10th wicket partnership: 9* runs - KM Dabengwa, Mpofu

Highest partnerships according to runs:
#96 runs: SC Williams, P Utseya
#52 runs: Mehrab Hossain Jr, Raqibul Hasan
#41 runs: Raqibul Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan
#38 runs: Tamim Iqbal, Mehrab Hossain Jr
#35* runs: RW Price, Mupariwa

So, we can easily tell that this was a very low scoring series (just like the Tri Nation Cup held in 2008-2009). This pitch of Mirpur was a blessing for the bowlers and a curse for the batsmen. I wonder how the great batting pitch of Mirpur turned out to be like this.

Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009: 3rd ODI

This 3rd match of the Zimbabwe’s Tour of Bangladesh 2009 Series is going to be a FINAL. It’s a very important match for the Bangladeshis. After the defeat in the 1st match and win in the 2nd the series is now leveled. So to win the cup Bangladesh will have to come out as victorious in this match. Best of luck.

Zimbabwe’s innings: 119/9 (37)
Bangladesh’s innings: 121/4 (32.3)
Match result: Mangladesh won by 6 wickets and 4.3 overs to spare.
Man of the Match: Mashrafe Mortaza

Series won by: Bangladesh
Man of the Series: Shakib Al Hasan

Toss won by: Bangladesh and selected to field first.

This match has been reduced to 37 over (max) because of thick fog.

Zimbabwe’s innings: As usual the first wicket fell in the first over. Mashrafe bowled in great line and length which resulted in a catch in the 3rd sleep position. He took 3 wickets in total giving away 26 runs in 8 overs. I thought that Ashraful has made a wrong decision of bring Shakib so early in the innings. He bowled just two overs in the first spell. Later Shakib managed to pick up 3 wickets giving away 15 runs in 8 overs. Rubel took 1 and Riyad took 2 wickets today. Riyad bowled well. Before the match Ashraful said that they will try to restrict Zimbabwe to 120.

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe zimbabwe's scorecard cricketBangladesh’s innings: Inspite of the slow batting at the bigining, I must say that the tigers batted moderately better today. Tamim (34 in 49) had a good start but couldn't hold his end of the wicket. Mehrab (2 in 25) and Ashraful (3 in 31) batted very poorly. But Shakib... he was great. He scored 33 in 36 balls with four 4s and led the team to victory. Though Mashrafe (3/26) was named the Man of the Mach, I thought that Shakib (3/15 and 33*) was more deserving owner of this title. No worries, he was named the Man of the Series.

Great news for all Tiger Fans. Shakib is officially the best ICC ODI all-rounder at the present time. He tops the ranking list for ODI all-rounders having 380 points. How cool is that!

shakib al hasan sakib bangladesh cricket teamShakib was at number 3 position today (21 January, 2009) during the match against Zimbabwe. After winning the match Shakib was moved up to the number one position. For your information, Shakib has scored 22 runs in 24 bowls today. Though he couldn’t manage to pick up wickets today, he gave away just 24 runs (1 extra) in his 10 overs. In the last game he gave 11 runs in 10 overs and took 3 vital wickets. Shakib was also recently named Man of the Series in the Tri Nation Cup 2009. Shakib is also the number 12 bowler and number 34 batsmen in ODI rankings. He is the number 10 all-rounder in test cricket also.

Shakib you have made us so proud. Thanks.

Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009: 2nd ODI

After the very low scoring tight defeat by Zimbabwe on the 1st ODI, I think the Tigers are ready for another match. This game is very important for Bangladesh. One reason is that if Bangladesh loses this match, they will lose the series. On the other hand if they lose this game it will be Bangladesh’s 3 back to back defeats against Zimbabwe which is really shameful.

Zimbabwe’s innings: 160/9
Bangladesh’s innings: 164/4 (44.5)
Match result: Bangladesh won the match by 6 wickets.
Man of the Match: Roqibul Hasan

Toss won by: Bangladesh and elected to bowl first.

Zimbabwe's innings: Just like the earlier matches Bangladesh had a great start with the ball in hand. Bowlers managed to pick up 6 wickets very quickly (26-29-37-45-46-47). But then a partnership of 96 runs helped Zimbabwe a lot to gather a low but decent total. During the 20-40 overs I thought that the Tigers couldn't bowl like tigers. It was decent, but not great. Fielding was great as usual. Today Ashraful made the right decision to reserve a few overs of Mashrafe for the last part of the match. He took 2 wickets in the last over. Nazmul (3/28) bowled well in the opening spell. Ashraful used Rubel (2/29) in the earlier part of the game and that worked to.

zimbabwe's scorecard zimbabwe vs bangladesh cricketBangladesh's innings: The batsmen batted with responsibility. So, the result... win. Much needed victory. Six in the last ball to bring the victory. Thanks to Roqibul for his 50+ runs. Apart from Ashraful all the batsmen reached double figure mark. Mehrab scored 43 runs.

Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009: 1st ODI

Bangladesh’s innings: 124/10 (48.1)
Zimbabwe innings: 127/8 (49.2)
Match Result: Zimbabwe won by 2 wickets
Man of the Match: R. Price

Winning the toss Bangladesh selected to bat first.

Bangladesh’s innings: Before this tournament Ashraful said that the confidence level is up. But the truth is, Bangladesh has forgotten how to bat. There’s no point trying to find out positive sides of this innings (Bangladesh’s perspective). After so many years of playing cricket you just can not accept/expect this kind of batting from the “tigers”. Zimbabwe bowled well- congratulations.

Zimbabwe’s innings: Just like the final match against Sri Lanka. How did the Tigers messed up 2 games in a row in the same fashion? hats off to Zimbabwe. They have played well. And someone please teach our boys to bat. Bangladesh has lost 2 back to back ODIs against Zimbabwe. I just hope that they don't lose the series.

Ashraful shouldn't have taken the bat first.

Why Did Bangladesh Lose?

(read the series analysis: Tri Nation Cup)
(read the review of the final match: BD vs SL)
(read the review of the 3rd match: BD vs SL)
(read the review of the 1st match: BD vs ZIM)

The final match of the recently finished Tri Nation Cup was pretty intense. It has made all Tiger Fans to jump in joy and to scream in agony at couple of crucial stages. I don’t think that neither of the teams has ever played a match as intense as it was. You can’t compare this match with the Multan test against Pakistan or the ODI against West Indies in St. Vincent (2004). Though it had a sad ending, it was an epic match for Bangladesh cricket and a painful one.

The table turned too often:

1. Bangladesh’s defeat was almost certain when they got all out for just 152 runs.
2. Bangladesh’s win was almost certain when they managed to pick up 5 wickets in 8 overs giving away just 6 runs.
3. Table turned once again when Sangakkara and Maharoof were batting.
4. Then table turned when Shakib took two wickets (Sangakkara) in the same over.
5. Finally…Murali!!!

Why Did Bangladesh Lose?

Everyone will agree with me if I say that currently we have lacking in our batting department. If only our top order batsmen could add another 30 to 40 runs to the scoreboard!

Rubel is a new comer. He was discovered by Grameen-Phone Pacer Hunt not more than 2 years ago. So definitely he lacks some maturity and experience. It was quite normal for him to be tensed and bowl bad deliveries at that stage. But I don’t think that Ashraful made the right decision of bringing him back into the attack. He could have brought Riyad or Naeem instead.

Bowling and fielding was excellent. But a lot of work is needed to be done about batting.

Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009

The 3 Match ODI series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will start soon from 19 January, 2009. This series will be called Grameen Phone ODI Series. Each match will be played at Mirpur National Stadium.

1st ODI: 19 January, 2009 (read the match review and scorecard)
2nd ODI: 21 January, 2009 (read the match review and scorecard)
3rd ODI: 23 January, 2009 (read the match review and scorecard)

Bangladesh have lost a match against Zimbabwe recently in the Tri Nation Cup. So the Tigers will definitely look to win the series and settle the score.

Best of luck to the Tigers.

Tri Nation Cup 2009: Series Analysis

In this series Bangladesh played 3 matches including the final match won just one game. Though they have lost the match against Zimbabwe this was a good series for the Tigers. In the 3rd match of this series Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka very comfortably and in the final match Bangladesh almost defeated them again. The man of the Series was also a Tiger Shakib Al Hasan. So overall the tigers have had a good series.

Most runs in this series:

#Shakib Al Hasan 153 in 151 balls
#Jayasuriya 76 in 94 balls
#Chigumbura 70 in 120 balls
#Raqibul Hasan 69 in 149 balls
#Sangakkara 36 in 154 balls
#Mohammad Ashraful 57 in 87 balls

Highest individual run in an innings:

#Shakib Al Hasan 92* in 69 balls
#Chigumbura 64 in 95 balls
#Sangakkara 59 in 133 balls
#Jayasuriya 54 in 64 balls
#Shakib Al Hasan 52 in 66 balls
#AD Mathews 52 in 96 balls

Highest avarage:

#Shakib Al Hasan 76.50
#AD Mathews 54.00
#Chigumbura 35.00

Most fifties:

#Shakib Al Hasan 2
4 batsmen scored 50+ runs once

Most wickets:

#A Mendis 7
#Kulasekara 7
#Mashrafe Mortaza 6
#Shakib Al Hasan 5
#Rainsford 4

So, it can be easily said that Shakib truely deserved the Man of the Series Award. The decission was made correctly.

# Sri Lanka
# Bangladesh
# Zimbabwe

In all sense this was a really low scoring tournament. But this 4 match series was a really exciting one. Bangladesh played really well in 'almost' all the matches. I though their fielding was exceptionally well. But I have to admit that Bangladesh has to work harder on their bowling. Sri Lanka played well as usual but I think that they are going through some ups and downs. Zimbabwe's positive attitude amazed me at the match against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Vs Sri Lanka: Final Match 2009

This was the final match of the Tri Nation Cup held among Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Though each of the teams had won one game each Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were ahead in the statistics (net run rate + bonus point), these two teams participated in the final ODI match. To be honest, this was a pretty intense game/tournament. You can check out the Tri Nation Cup series analysis here.

Bangladesh: 152/10 (49.4)
Sri Lanka: 153/8 (48.1)
Match Result: Sri Lanka won the match by 2 wickets.
Man of the Match: Sangakkara
Man of the Series: Shakib Al Hasan for 153 runs, 5 wickets, extraordinary fielding.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Bangladesh's innings: What can I say? After being 151 for 6 Bangladesh lost last 4 wickets adding just 1 run to the total. Only good thing in this match is the performance of Roqibul. He along with Riyad (p.r. 44) and Naeem (p.r. 53) gifted two moderately good partnerships. In the end Roqibul was not out with 43 runs. In these 43 runs there is only one boundary. Shakib couldn’t show his magic today and that’s understandable. You can’t expect someone to fire out in every match (prior to this match Shakib scored 3 half centuries in the last 4 matches). Once again disappointing stuff from out top order and Ashraful.

Sri Lanka’s innings: WOW!!! Who had thought that this would happen? 6 runs for 5 wickets!!! If you are a fan of Tiger Cricket you have enjoyed the first 11 overs tremendously. Jayasuria, Tharanga, Jayabadrane all got out in no time. But Sangakkara was holding firmly the other side of the pitch. He along with Maharoof (38*) batted wonderfully at that stage. But Sangakkara (114/7) was caught and bowled by Shakib. In the same over Shakib managed to bowl out Kulasekara (114/8). Then came Muralitharan. 4 4 2 4 0 6. 15 runs required in 24 balls. Muralitharan (33* in 16) hits again. Game’s over. Ashraful shouldn't have brought Rubel back in action at this stage after being hit for 20.

Good game. But I’m very sad.

Players:

Bangladesh: Mohammad Ashraful (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Zunaed Siddique, Roqibul Hassan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nazmul Hossain, Mahmud Ullah Riyad, Rubel Hossain.

Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jehan Mubarak, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Farveez Maharoof, Thilina Thushara, Nuwan Kulasekara.

Bangladesh Vs. Sri Lanka: Tri-Nation Cup 2009

This is the 3rd match of the Tri Nation Cup 2009 held between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka: 147/10 (30.3/31)
Bangladesh: 151/5 (23.5/31)
Bangladesh won by 5 wickets and 7.1 overs to spare.
Man of the match is Shakib Al Hasan.

WOOOOOW!

WHAT A GAME!!

Bangladesh just didn't win the game they also earned the right to play in the finals of this Tri Nation cup (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe). Bangladesh had lost the match against Zimbabwe earlier in this series. So to qualify for the Finals Bangladesh had to win this game in 24.5 over....and they did so...hurray!!! Thanks to Shakib Al Hasan.

This ODI match was reduced to 31 overs because of the late start (foggy weather). Coming to bat Sri Lanka lost their 2 wickets very quickly...thanks to Mashrafe's magnificent 1st spell. Apart from the great Jayasuria (54) no one could stand before the Tigers. Rubel Hossain (debutant) bowled wonderfully to become the most wicket taker in a match against Sri Lanka. He took 4 wickets giving away 33 runs. The tigers did a wonderful job with the ball.

Coming to bat Bangladesh had to face their old problem of losing early wickets. They lost 3 wickets in just 11 runs. Poor performance once again by our top order batsmen. Then came the all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The pertnership between Shakib and Ashraful scored 91 runs which helped a lot. BTW, the victory came with the huge six from the bat of Naeem Islam.

Shakib was 92 not out.

The final match of this tournament will be played on 16 January, 2009.

Best of luck.

Highlights of the Bangladesh Innings:

Players:

Sri Lanka:
Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jehan Mubarak, Angelo Mathews, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Thilina Thushara, Nuwan Kulasekera

Bangladesh: Mohammad Ashraful (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Zunaed Siddique, Roqibul Hassan, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (Wicketkeeper), Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahbubul Alam, Mahmud Ullah Riyad, Rubel Hossain.

Bangladesh Vs. Zimbabwe: Tri Nation Cup 2009

(If you are looking for Zimbabwe's Tour of Bangladesh 2009 Series review, click here.)

Zimbabwe: 205/9
Bangladesh: 167/10
Zimbabwe won by 38 runs.

This was totally unexpected...(or was it?). This defeat is 'a' proof of the poor performance of the Tigers in the recent times. Maybe Bangladesh is lacking the talents of the "ICL gone" players. Though I support ICL, I don't want to see Bangladesh National Team feeling the need of calling back Afted, Shahriar and Farhad Reza.

When Bangladesh first came on to bowl they couldn't do a decent job. So Zimbabwe's ran rate was going above average. But then things started to change for Bangladesh and they managed to restrict the score to 204.

Who thought that the tigers would struggle to get the runs necessary to win?

But they struggled really hard. After the early demise of Zunaed (0) Mushfiq also Scored nothing. Ashraful (18) had a moderate start but he also played his 'natural' game and gave away his wicket. In todays line up Shakib Al Hasan (52) was a lot different. As usual he played with maturity and patience. I thought 10th man Mahbubul Alam played well to as he has scored 22 today.

But to end this post, I'd have to say that The Tigers played poor cricket today. I hope they will play better against Sri Lanka. Otherwise Bangladesh will not have the oppertunity to play in the final of this tri-nation cup.

Bangladesh has been a part of cricket and the ICC for many years. It's also clear that in this team there's no shortage of talent. But talent doesn't count a thing if the players can't convert them into runs and wickets. This type of poor performance is not at all acceptable from Bangladesh at this point.

Best of luck.

Bangladesh Sri-Lanka Zimbabwe Tri Nation Cup 2009

After the shameful defeat against Sri Lanka in the last test match, i think, Bangladesh is ready to face the tri nation cup which is about to start. The series will began on 10 January with the match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Enamul Haque Jr will play in place of Abdur Razzak. I hope Bangladesh does well in this series.

The fixture is given below.

Bangladesh Vs. Sri Lanka 08 09 : 2nd Test

Sri Lanka 1st innings: 384/10
Bangladesh 1st innings: 208/10
Sri Lanka 2nd innings: 447/6 (dec)
Bangladesh 2nd innings: 158/10
Sri Lanka won by 465 runs.

(Sorry, I'm not in the mood to write a proper review of this game)

The 1st innings of the match was relatively good for Bangladesh. They had managed to pick up 3 early wickets. The Tigers stroke 1st when Sri Lanka's score was just 1. Sri Lanka was once 39 for 3. Yet they managed to get 384 runs.

The highlight of the Bangladeshi 1st innings was the batting of Mashrafe. He scored a fifty coming to bat at number 9. It (Mashrafe and Shahadat) was Bangladesh's highest run pertnership at the last wicket against Sri Lanka.

And then, what can I say? Sri Lanka played superb and the Tigers s*cked.

Bangladesh Vs. Sri Lanka 08 09: 1st Test

26 December, 2008 - 31 December, 2008

Sri Lanka 1st innings: 293/10
Bangladesh 1st innings: 178/10
Sri Lanka 2nd innings: 405/6 (dec)
Bangladesh 2nd innings: 413/10
Sri Lanka won by 107 runs
Man of the match is Shakib Al Hasan for contributing both with the ball and the bat.

First of all I’d have to say that I wasn’t able to watch this game because of many reasons. First of all on 26th December (the first day of the match) I had an exam to attend, secondly I was quite busy on the next 3 days, on the fourth day I was free but BTV didn’t telecast the match as it was publishing the results of the 9th national election of Bangladesh. So I missed 4 days of this test match.

(For those who don’t know this, this 5 day test match was played in 6 days because of the election on 29th December)

I was really happy when I saw that Bangladesh had managed to restrict the Lankans in just 293 runs. But all hopes soon faded away because of the poor performance of the batsmen of the Bangladesh Cricket Team. After being 90/2 they managed to get just 178 runs!

Sri Lankan players didn’t make the same mistakes in the 2nd innings. They played extremely well to get a total of 405. Sangakkara and Jayawardene’s superb partnership worried the tigers a lot. Sri Lankans declared their innings when the lead was of 520 runs. So to win Bangladesh had to take 521 runs in almost 2 days.

This 4th innings of this match was a treat to watch (only innings I watched in this match). Ashraful, Shakib, Mushfiq, Tamim played wonderfully. If only Shakib and Mushfiq could play longer!

Better luck next time.
